The issue
The client, one of the world’s largest copper mining companies based in Chile, faced the considerable challenge of producing its first sustainability report. Moreover, the report had to simultaneously comply with the group company’s internal policies and standards as well as those embedded in the Global Reporting Initiative, the UN Global Compact, and the International Council on Mining & Metal. A further challenge was to develop an integrated approach to reporting on economic, social, and environmental indicators and performance.
Our approach
On the client’s behalf, a team of PricewaterhouseCoopers professionals:
- Advised the client on international best practice in sustainability reporting based on a benchmarking exercise of mining companies
- Facilitated the preparation of the report by mobilizing and coordinating all relevant internal parties
- Designed a practical tool and structured process to gather the information necessary for sustainability reporting
The outcome
PricewaterhouseCoopers enabled the client to produce its first sustainability report in line with international best practice standards. The company can now demonstrate its ability to comply with both internal and external requirements and establish its standing among its peers as a sustainability leader. The client also has a firm grasp on the processes required to continue to meet high standards in sustainability reporting.
