Abstract: American perspectives

After a long history of US self-reliance, during which prosperity could typically be found within our own borders, today we’re meeting and working with nations and people worldwide who are still new to us and who are building major economic power of their own.

Indeed, with the presidential elections of 2008 against the backdrop of a declining dollar and unrest stemming from foreign wars and terrorism, Americans are weighing our changing place on the world stage. Turbulence in the financial services industry, the rising cost of energy, food and healthcare, and a weak housing market have only added to those concerns.

To establish a baseline for our own thinking, we met individually with a cross section of senior US executives, academics, public policy experts and PwC partners and held discussions that encouraged them to speak expansively on the issues.

Three key questions were posed:

  • What patterns do you consider to be locked in, or predetermined, in the broad competitive environment for the next decade?
  • What elements do you consider to be in great flux—or nearly unpredictable?
  • How do you expect the decade ahead to be different from the one that just passed?

This publication mirrors major threads and conclusions of our discussions and amplifies them in essays as well as interviews with leading authorities.
